The Inner Axial Muscles

Inner Axial muscles are the key to holding your skeleton in its proper position. If you are experiencing pain in areas, it is most likely because you have an imbalance in parts of your body. Your body has 639 muscles in total, which are divided into two major categories:

1. Major and minor movers: the biceps, triceps, quadriceps, calves, and hamstrings. They are specifically designed to move the skeleton. They make up 239 of the 639 muscles in the body. Movement is their only purpose and their only capability. They cannot hold skeletal position.

2. The “inner axial” muscles: These muscles are held closely to the spine, pelvic girdle, and shoulder girdle. They are the deep structural muscles. The inner axial muscles make up the remaining 400 muscles in the body and are specifically layered against the bones to hold the proper position of the skeleton. Because we are no longer running, jumping, leaping, climbing, crawling, pushing, or pulling, we are not using our own body weight on a regular basis. Our activities are limited to doing major and minor mover musculature training, because anytime we attach weight to our feet or hands, we automatically bypass the inner axial muscles and isolate the major and minor movers. You cannot fool this body of ours. It knows that there’s extra work to be done, so it recruits just those major and minor movers as it’s asked to do improper movement and motor patterns with weights attached. All of the things we talked about earlier such as sitting at the computer or in the car, hunched over a cell phone, and activities such as golf, tennis, soccer, and volleyball train the body to be in the wrong position.

All of these activities create gross imbalances between the major and minor movers and the inner axial muscles, which are the deep structural muscles.

Protect Your Inner Axial Muscles

As the inner axial muscles get weak, atrophy, and fall asleep, the major and minor movers must step up and do the work of holding the skeletal position. Because they are not designed to do so, the skeletal position then becomes very distorted and unbalanced. Once the body becomes this way you will experience pain. This imbalance is what causes the hinged forward shoulder position, the head forward position, the elevated and rotated pelvic position, and the internal or external rotated upper leg, which causes the knee to track improperly which, in turn, causes pronation and supination of the foot and ankle. It’s like a house of cards. Once the body loses its position, all of the joints stop articulating properly, and you begin to wear out cartilage, create arthritis, and more. In addition, the spine’s improper position begins to compress and wear out discs in the back and neck. It’s just a matter of time before the negative symptoms appear.

Please don’t confuse “the core,” which is a current buzzword in the training industry, with the inner axial muscles.
